Canning Tomatoes by Half Bushel
We grow lots of tomatoes at Tuttles, and typically have some “Seconds” available for canning in Mid August through Labor Day weekend.
What is a canning tomato?
What we calling canning tomatoes are tomatoes that are slightly imperfect and would not be sold as #1 slicing tomatoes, but are good for making salsa or canning. They may have strange shapes, slightly blemished areas, splits around stem, yellowing at the top, etc. These tomatoes are available at a largely reduced cost to what “First Quality” tomatoes would be. They are sold by the half bushel.
When is the best time to get canning tomatoes?
Canning tomatoes are generally available after the large quantities of field tomatoes come in around mid-August. They are typically available through the first week of September. Obviously, weather can play a role in this from year to year.
How do I reserve or order canning tomatoes?
Canning tomatoes are quite popular and we often do not have any available to just come and pick up in our farm store as they are sold out very quickly. If you are interested in canning tomatoes, we suggest that you call our farm store and get added to the canning tomato list. Our canning tomato list is a waiting list of those interested in canning tomatoes. We will ask you how many you want, if there’s any special requests (yellow tomatoes, romas, etc) and your preferred time of the week. Then as we have tomatoes available we call down the list and ask if you would like them. You can request a certain date, but we don’t guarantee they will be available on that date as there are lot of factors that can play into how many tomatoes we have available on any one day.
Varieties: We grow an assortment of varieties at Tuttles. If you are interested in a certain variety, please call and ask.
You can also always call the farm store to see if we have some available to just come in and pick up. There are days when we do…typically late August.
